by Maxwell Payne

Created on: June 12, 2009

How to write a resume as a pharmacy technician.

As a pharmacy technician looking for a new job in the pharmacy industry, you will want the resume to reflect your past and present experience. You will also want the resume to reflect any education, job training, certifications, and licenses that you may have obtained before or during your time at the previous pharmacy job.

A resume will include standard information such as name, address, and contact information. It will also include educational history and past job history, although those with an extensive list of past jobs will want to focus only on the most recent jobs and those most relevant for the position being applied to.

Place your name, address, and contact information on the top of the resume. You can also include your e-mail address if it is professional looking.

Write a brief summary (no longer than 5 or 6 sentences) describing your relevant pharmacy job skills, job experience, and any accomplishments. Include information if you are licensed by a state or national board.

Write a brief section on the specific strengths that you have developed in past job roles, especially previous pharmacy technician roles. It is recommended that you use terminology that shows leadership and motivation. Include strengths such as certifications or job titles (such as being the Lead Tech at a pharmacy or being in charge of Inventory).

Write up a list of your professional experience starting with your most recent job. You do not need to include reasons for leaving or feelings towards the job. Rather focus on the specific roles and responsibilities that you held in the job.

List the employer (or company) name along with the time period that you held the job. Do not include salary information.

Consider the most crucial duties that you performed in your job and list those duties first. For example if your main duty was to do data entry at the pharmacy drop off station, place emphasis on your role of deciphering and reading prescriptions and entering them into the computer system.

List under duties for each job you worked in starting with the less crucial duties coming towards the end of the list. Keep the list of duties short and to the point.

List educational experience. Include your high school name and year of graduation. If you obtained a G.E.D. list that along with the date it as earned. Include any college education you may have received and include the name of the college, your major(s), and any coursework relevant to being a pharmacy technician.
If you attended a trade school for pharmacy technicians list that as well. Continuing education courses may also be listed.

List any certifications or affiliations that you may have with professional organizations. Many pharmacy technicians have taken the PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) examination to be certified nationally. If you belong to any Pharmacy Technician’s organization, list that as well.

Include a few references. While this is not required, a good reference can let the new potential employer know that you are hard working and dependable. Using a past employer as a reference can be useful as long as you left that job on good terms.

Prepare a cover letter for your completed resume. The cover letter should briefly tell the hiring manager why you are applying for the job and why you want for this particular employer. This gives you the chance to show your writing skills as well as ‘sell’ yourself to the hiring manager.

Include brief details of your work experience (such as saying ‘I have over 6 years in retail pharmacy experience), and any license or certifications that you may have.

Sending a follow up letter or e-mail as a thank you is optional, but is considered to be a polite thing to do, whether or not you are hired for the job.

Do not make up facts or lie on your resume. Employers across all industries look into resumes to verify that information stated on the resume is in fact valid.

With US doctors writing about 3.5 billion prescriptions yearly, according to IMS Health, pharmacy personnel, including pharmacy technicians, are in great demand. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts pharmacy technician job growth of nearly 32 percent between 2006 and 2016.

But don’t assume that just because jobs are plentiful, you’ll be able to land a pharm tech position effortlessly. To help you get your job of choice, be sure to submit a compelling entry-level resume.

“Many people understand the basic components of a resume,” says Mike Johnston, CPhT, founder and chairman of the National Pharmacy Technician Association (NPTA) and author of Rx for Success: A Career Enhancement Guide for Pharmacy Technicians. “But items that are specific to pharmacy technicians should also be included.”

Here are some tips on writing the perfect pharmacy technician entry-level resume:

Tailor Your Objective

Susan Jeffery, CPhT, a past president of the American Association of Pharmacy Technicians (AAPT), says your resume objective should demonstrate your willingness to learn.

“Pharmacy technicians should add a sentence to their professional objectives that lets the hiring manager know they are interested in opportunities for further specialization or professional growth,” she says. For example:

Career Objective: To obtain a pharmacy technician position with an expanding company. Strong interest in pursuing professional development opportunities, including specialized training and licensure in the organization’s growth areas.

Expand on Your Education and Skills

List education, training, licensure and academic honors to help you stand out. In addition, include special skills, such as fluency in another language, dispensing or dealing with billing and reimbursement for insurance, workers’ compensation or Medicaid. These terms will act as keywords when potential employers search the Monster resume database.

“Listing specialty certifications, like intravenous drugs, compounding or diabetes home management, can help you get noticed and get higher salaries,” Johnston says. However, he suggests listing continuing-education (CE) credits only if the courses you took were on special, advanced topics, such as quality control or preparing radioactive elements. CE in and of itself “isn’t a differentiator,” he says. “It’s expected.”

Elaborate on Your Work History

When it comes to the chronologically ordered employment history, hiring managers prefer a rich description of what you do day-to-day rather than a generic list of your duties.

For example, instead of saying:

Responsibilities included assisting the pharmacist, prescription intake and insurance billing.

Say this:

Responsibilities included counting the prescribed number of tablets, entering prescription information into the computer to produce labels and overseeing workers’ compensation reimbursements.

If you’re a recent graduate, include internships, externships, clinical rotations and preceptorships. List nonpharmacy work experience to demonstrate job stability. Unless you worked at a national chain or well-known hospital, describe your past employers to give the hiring manager some context of your previous work environment. For example:

Gained in-depth knowledge of geriatric drugs from daily interaction with elderly patients and drug dispensing at 100-bed nursing home.

“Be honest,” Jeffery says. “Never lie about your knowledge or experience. Everything you do impacts someone’s life. Always include all workplaces and all schooling and classes.”

Flaunt Your Associations

Belonging to a professional organization, such as the NPTA or the AAPT, and attending seminars and conventions telegraphs your dedication to the field. On your Monster resume, call out your memberships in the Affiliations section.

Entry-Level Resume Dos and Don’ts

Finally, heed some standard resume advice:

Make Sure Your Resume Is Free of Spelling Errors: In pharmacy practice, a misspelled word could lead to a fatal error. Proof, review and proof again. Then have someone else do the same thing.

Keep Your Resume to One Page: A two-page resume is acceptable if you’ve earned specialized CE credits or have some other form of specialized training, such as compounding, that’s relevant to the employer’s needs, Johnston says.

Don’t Include Hobbies and Personal Interests: Hiring managers can ask about these during the interview if they want to know.

“These are the little things that people don’t think about, but they can make a big impact on a hiring manager,” Johnston says.

You want to let the director of nurses know about your education, skills, interests and goals. You can see a Sample CNA resume at the end of this guide.

What You Will Need to List

You will need to list the high school where you graduated and the year you obtained your diploma or GED certificate. The program where you obtained your training as a certified nurses’ aide is important to list, with the dates you attended, the names and telephone numbers of you teachers, and the date your obtained your certificate or were first listed on the state registry. As you take continuing education courses, those too should be listed, with the title of the course, number of hours completed and provider name and contact information.

Any work experience you have should also be listed, along with the dates you worked and the name of your supervisor with a way of contacting him or her. Even if your previous work experience has not been in the field of healthcare, it should still be listed to show the reader that you are capable of working in a responsible manner. If your previous work experience has been babysitting your neighbor’s children or mowing lawns, put it down with a contact number for the people you worked for. Volunteer experience should also be listed.

Special skills are also a good idea to list. If you are fluent in a foreign language, for instance, or you are capable of lifting 100-pound weights, this could be helpful on the job.

References should also be listed. Names, addresses, and telephone numbers of former teachers are good for professional references. Personal references can include anyone who knows you well enough to vouch for your character, such as friends and neighbors or your physician or clergyman.

What You Should not Include

Prospective employers do not need to know about your hobbies or anything having to do with your personal life. If you have had legal problems wait until you are asked for information. You are not required to inform prospective employers about your ethnic group or religious, political or personal beliefs.

The Basic Structure Of A CNA Resume

There are different styles for resumes, but the basic idea is to organize your information in a way that will make it easy for a prospective employer to read at a glance.

Your name, address, telephone number and email address at the top will tell the reader whose resume he or she is reading and how to get in touch with you for an interview.

In most resumes education comes next, with the names, addresses and telephone numbers of schools you attended and the dates you attended. When you take continuing education, that can be added as well.

Your experience can be listed next, with job titles, names, addresses and telephone numbers of employers, and starting and ending dates you were employed.

References are typically listed last, with the names and titles of the people listed, their relationship to you, and contact information.

Some resume writers prefer to list skill sets, such as vital signs and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and then write where the skills were obtained and how long you practiced them. This kind of resume is better for more experienced nurses’ assistants who have acquired specialized skills along the way.
